Our roaming reporter Freddie D takes a brief look at data roaming and why eSIMS can make sense on your adventures.
An eSIM is a digital SIM card that is downloaded and embedded into a device instead of using a physical SIM.
We got into using eSIMS when we travelled to Canada 3 years ago and have sworn by them since.
Most of us on UK phone contracts will be charged for using data abroad. These charges can vary from a few pounds to much more depending on your provider. For a week away, you could end up spending more than £15 if you are using data every day.
An eSIM from Airalo for 7 days in France with 1GB of data costs only $4.50 – this seems like a no brainer to us!

So what are the pros and cons of using eSIMS?
Positives:
It is cheaper than relying on data roaming charges from your UK provider
You can download your eSIM before you go away so that you are ready to connect once you have landed in your destination
Purchasing eSIMS is straight forward through a service providers app – we use Airalo
Points to be aware of:
Accessing an eSIM is dependent on your device compatibility with eSIMS
You need to be connected to wifi to download and activate your eSIM so it is advised that you purchase your eSIM before you travel
So what does this have to do with insurance? Well, we launched our eSnowcard earlier this season and if you ever need assistance abroad, having reliable data makes life easier if you need to call for help!
